APoJi 2011

Dear friend,

Thank you for your interest in this most unconventional initiative to promote grassroots, collaborative, peace-thinking about the Middle East.

The story of APoJi (A Peace of Jerusalem initiative) began on October 27, 2009, when the idea was proposed during a friendly discussion about “intractable problems” and “impossible dreams.”

On November 5, 2009, the first official iteration of the proposal “A Peace of Jerusalem” was posted on this site.

On August 7, 2010, after collecting and collating the input of about 300 interested observers from around the world, and after dozens of interim versions were posted, the ‘final’ version of the main text was frozen and placed into the public domain.

Future versions of the document will be denoted by the year in which they are published; e.g. A Peace of Jerusalem 2011.

The first print edition of the document was published on December 13, 2010, and distributed to all contributors who provided a physical mailing address, but who will otherwise remain anonymous.

A few small changes to the preamble were made since that time and have been incorporated into the digital master which can be found here: http://apoji.org.

[Note: URL now links to the final version — Ed., September 24, 2014]

Working within a self-imposed 2,000 word limit for the main body of the text (and a nine-month timeframe), the result is something that the average person can read—and mostly understand—in about ten to twenty minutes (30 is more realistic — Ed.) The myriad details required to properly implement such a plan will be left to the engineers, lawyers, diplomats and bureaucrats to discuss.

Theoretically, the success of any such proposal would rely upon the earnest parallel pursuit of a wider, regional treaty on refugees and human rights.

We invite your constructive participation in this project through the link provided above.

.
On behalf of the composing group and with sincere regards,

S.

A Peace of Jerusalem: Revision Notice

The document A Peace of Jerusalem was revised on this date.

The document is the result of a collaboration undertaken between October 27, 2009, and August 7, 2010, involving approximately 300 people from different countries and regions of the world (including Israel, the West Bank, Canada, the US, the UK, France, Lebanon, Iran, Kenya, Germany, Jordan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, India, Russia, Pakistan, Italy and others) each of whom contributed their own ideas, beliefs and opinions to the project.

On December 13, 2010, the print version of the document was published and subsequently distributed to the contributors who chose to provide their mailing information. A small correction to the preamble was made in the December print run and the on-line version was updated to reflect that change on January 2, 2011.

All comments welcome.

So Long, Kodachrome

afghan girl by Steve McCurry for National Geographic magazine

Afghan Girl, 1984; Steve McCurry, National Geographic

After a run of 75 years, the last roll of Kodachrome film will be developed today at Dwayne’s Photo in Kansas — until now, the last remaining Kodachrome developer in the world.

Kodachrome brought us some of the most vibrant and stunning photography of the past three-quarters of a century, such as this award-winning photograph of a young Afghan girl snapped by National Geographic’s Steve McCurry in 1984.

The story of this haunting image can be found at National Geographic’s site.

Kodak discontinued production of the film last summer. Farewell, old friend.

Cover Letter #847

Re: Editor/Copywriter Job

Dear HR,

I enjoy adapting client-provided copy and I am
fully prepared to pad, slash, amplify, contour,
warp, finesse or mechanically debone any such
text which does disservice to the honour of said
client’s own brand. I intend to do this using the
most advanced methods known to modern
para-phraseology — all the while preserving
the original author’s ego and erstwhile intent.

Of course, I can also write original copy in
‘voices’ so inspired that actual angels have
been known to descend from on high and to
alight upon the shoulders of any whose eyes
or ears were fortunate enough to encounter
my words. And, obviously, in terms of voices,
I’ve got ‘megalomaniacal bastard’ down pat.

Also, in the interest of full disclosure, I should
confess that I often don’t actually laugh out loud
while typing LOL in response to an e-witticism.
I won’t deny it. It would have come out anyway;
if not during our correspondence, then certainly
at some point during my long and distinguished
career with your firm.

Sincerely,

Ruling: Genetically-modified foods are not kosher

This two-part ruling is simply one man’s determination of the issue and is not binding on others — unless they wish it to be, of course.

1) Foods made with genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) are not kosher.

2) Natural hybrids are generally fine, provided that both gametes were kosher.
